What is SCRIP?
SCRIP is any substitute for currency. SCRIP began over century ago as a way of paying employees when regular currency was unavailable due to war or an economic crisis (ex. The Great Depression). Today, SCRIP is a fundraising method for schools and other non-profit organizations.
How does SCRIP work as a fundraising method?
With SCRIP fundraising, retailers offer gift certificates and gift cards to non-profit organizations at a discount. The non-profit organizations sell the gift cards to member families at full face value. The families redeem the gift cards at full face value, and the discount or rebate is retained by the non-profit organization as revenue. Currently, St. Rose of Lima School splits the rebate with the family: one half comes to the school, one half is applied to the family’s tuition bill. Please note that the SCRIP credit is accumulated throughout a school year and applied to the following year’s tuition bill.
How do I use SCRIP cards?
SCRIP cards are gift cards. Therefore, use them like cash in the store from which they are issued. You may give the cards as gifts to family and friends or use them for your regular shopping. SCRIP cards do not expire. Each time you make a purchase, you reduce the amount on the card until it reaches $0. When you have used up the full value, simply purchase another one from us.
Why is SCRIP important to use?
SCRIP is important to use because it’s free money. You will spend the same amount of currency at the store, why not recoup some of that money (usually 5%) through a SCRIP card? The discount reduces your tuition and helps support St. Rose of Lima School. SCRIP cards are a win-win situation for you.
May other family members or friends use SCRIP?
Yes. Anyone may purchase SCRIP cards. If they do, the discount is applied to your tuition bill and the school’s fundraising account.
