On January 6th, another Green Club meeting was held. Previously in our last meeting we invited Father Wilson and Mrs. Fuller to discuss the lunch tray issue. Unfortunately, Father Wilson and Mrs. Fuller had conflicts, so they were not able to attend. We did receive a response from Mayor Avedesian regarding the city of Warwick providing us with recycling pick up. Sadly, his letter stated to us that he was very excited to hear how our school is taking action to go green and help our environment, but there is not enough money for the city to come to a private school to pick up our recyclables.
Mrs. Dunlap, our 2nd grade teacher, was very generous and offered to bring all of the cans and bottles at St. Rose School to her apartment and recycle them at her home. Also, Mrs. Fuller received a phone call from the church office with an offer to take our recyclables also. The Green Club decided to vote on which way we would take care of our recyclables. The vote was unanimous to let Mrs. Dunlap take the cans and bottles from our school to her home, to recycle them. In addition to this, we would need at least fourteen blue recycling bins. It would be a cost of about 70 dollars. The Green Club suggested that we would have a “Go Green Dress Down Day”, during which students would dress down in green for a dollar in order to support the Green Club to purchase the blue recycling bins. Which we will check with Mrs. Fuller to have her approval. Since this is our first fundraiser, we will need a treasurer. Members above the 4th grade were able to run. Katie from grade 6 and Sam from grade 8 ran for treasurer. Everyone voted, and Sam is our new treasurer. When we are able to purchase our new recycling bins, Liam, Jacob, Christian, and Nick volunteered to ask their parents to pick up the bins from public works.
An idea of putting posters around the school, and having members from the Green Club going from class to class talking about recycling was suggested by our president, Becca, to publicize our new recycling program.
Another project idea for the Green Club was to sell reusable shopping bags as a fundraiser. The idea was put to a vote and the club decided with a vote 9 to 1 to take on this project. Watch for further details.
Mrs. Pereira announced to the Green Club, that maybe in the spring, the Green Club could plant a garden. She also said that the Green Club could take soda bottles and make bird feeders out of them and put them around the school. The club did not have much time to talk about this but it will be discussed at a future meeting.
